The heart and soul of the Scottish Highland town of Dornoch is its thirteenth century cathedral.

No visit to the Royal Burgh of Dornoch is complete without visiting stunning Dornoch Cathedral. Upon entering the main street of the town, you can’t help but notice the small but beautiful centrally located cathedral.

Upon entering the building, the magnificent stained glass windows make an immediate impression. For such a diminutive building, the visitor is spoilt by an array of twenty seven of these stunning crafted windows. Enjoy the cleverly crafted woodwork about the interior including that about the organ, pews and pulpit.

The cathedral was built way back in the thirteenth century surviving more than the odd skirmish. Hard to believe now that the cathedral was razed to the ground because warring families in 1570. It took some time, but a couple of centuries later, the cathedral was brought back to life and standing pretty much as it once did.

The eyes of the world were on Dornoch during 2001 when pop superstar Madonna and her son were christened at the Royal Burgh’s cathedral.
